Hey, y'all!
Saturday, downtown Denton gets a little strange. The good kind of strange. The Day of the Dead Festival shuts down three streets, and grown adults race homemade coffins down Hickory Street. Our plan: grab a spot by the raceway in the afternoon, hunt down some tacos, and stay for the lantern parade and coffin races at Denton's Day of the Dead Festival. The free DCTA shuttle means nobody circles the block for parking.
Too much for the little ones? Old Town Lewisville has the easy win that same night. At Little Monsters on Main, the shops hand out candy from 6 to 8, haunted hayrides roll out of City Hall, and a free movie plays in Wayne Ferguson Plaza at 8. First 500 kids at the Info Tent get a candy bag.
Sunday, Grandscape puts its Diwali Festival of Lights on the lawn, more than 350 performers, noon to 9. We're packing lawn chairs and staying till the lights come on.
In the news: Thrive's membership prices change January 1, so renew before then and you keep today's rate. Early voting runs through October 30 at any Denton County site.
Also inside: Korean fried chicken with an arcade in Flower Mound, a fall candle poured right here in Lewisville, a showcase home in The Colony, and Gizmo, a 6.8-pound senior Chihuahua mix waiting on a lap at the shelter.
See you on Main Street,
- Jason

💀 Denton's Day of the Dead Festival
Downtown Denton
Hickory St, E Oak St and Industrial St, Denton, TX
Saturday, October 24, 2026
11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Free admission, food and vendors pay as you go
See the coffin races, lantern parade and everything else happening at Denton's Day of the Dead Festival
Last full weekend of October, every year, downtown Denton goes a little sideways. Three streets shut down. Grown adults race homemade coffins down Hickory Street. We are not making that up.
The races go back to 2012. Early on, one fella rode the thing down on a hospital gurney. There are real rules now, but the teams still pour everything into their builds. The festival says it plain: show up early, stake out a spot along the raceway.
The rest of the day is one big street fair. Día de los Muertos, Halloween and harvest all mashed together. A community altar, live music, folk dancing, a costume contest, and rows of food and craft vendors. For the kids there's the Street of Screams, where the games, rides and inflatables don't cost a thing.
Then it gets dark, and the Twilight Lantern Parade winds around the Square. Glowing costumes, lanterns, drummers, lit-up bikes. Anybody in costume can jump in at the lineup, no sign-up. Organizers expect north of 25,000 people, so get there early.
Here's our plan. Coffin races in the afternoon, eat our way down Oak Street, stay for the parade. Skip the parking hunt and hop the free DCTA shuttle, which runs 10 a.m. to midnight. Dust off a costume and GO.

🥩 Rock Pepper Fire
Dan and Niha Shah, husband and wife, opened Rock Pepper Fire on Flower Mound Road a couple of years back. The menu runs Korean into Indian, Nepalese, Mexican and Tex-Mex, so bulgogi nachos and paneer can land on the same table.
It's loud in the good way. Fourteen TVs, an arcade room, pool tables, a dog-friendly patio. This is our Friday-night spot when the kids want chicken tenders and we want a little heat.
The fried chicken is the main event. Marinated 24 hours, double fried Korean style, tossed in your pick of 10-plus sauces. Bone-in wings start at $14.99. The House Special Fried Rice ($15.99) is the bestseller, wok fried with a sunny-side egg on top.
The full menu also has Nepalese momo dumplings tossed in Korean sauce, a bulgogi Philly cheesesteak and tteokbokki rice cakes. The Bulgogi Lettuce Wraps ($19.25) are built for sharing. The K-style Philly runs $17.99 with fries.
Weekday lunch is where the deal lives. From 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., lunch boxes start at $12, rice plus a protein, dumplings and two sides. Kids' meals are $7.99. One customer put it plainly: "the lemon pepper wings were the best lemon pepper I've ever had."
Heads up: they're closed Mondays, and come the weekend the place leans more sports bar after dark.

🛋️ Sparrow & Co
Still got summer pillows on the couch? Sparrow & Co just set out its fall collection. The shop lives in a restored 1920s brick building on Main Street in Old Town, right next to its event space, Sparrow on Main.
Inside it's handmade and vintage home decor, coffee table books, tabletop and bar pieces, jewelry, rugs from artisans all over the world. New for fall, the Retha, Marilee and Arlene pillows start at $95. The nubby throws are $108.
The candles are the easy buy. The Claret one smells like cranberry, clove and ginger. It's $22 for a 6-ounce tin, $44 in glass, with a matching $24 room spray.
Those candles are poured right here in Lewisville. Sparrow & Co's ROW Production Studio hires local women overcoming hard circumstances to make its candles and textiles, and the shop pours 100% of its net proceeds right back into that work.
Heads up: the hours are short. Thursday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by appointment. Their 4th annual Holiday Market with local makers is Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

🏋️ Thrive membership prices change January 1
Lewisville's Thrive Recreation Center, 1950 S. Valley Pkwy, Lewisville, TX 75067, moves to a new fee schedule on Friday, January 1, 2027. The city says resident rates haven't budged since Thrive opened in 2020, and the cost of staff and programs has climbed since.
Biggest change hits members 60 and older, who now pick between two plans. A $30 Senior Membership covers senior programs and social activities during set senior hours. A new $55 Active Adult Membership adds the fitness floor, gyms, indoor track and pool. Under the city's new 2027 Thrive membership rate table, a resident adult annual pass runs $231 and a family annual pass $303.
Already a member? The city says you can renew before January 1 and lock in today's price.

🌉 Lake Avalon Park's boardwalk and bridge are being rebuilt
Crews started tearing out and replacing the boardwalk and bridge at Lake Avalon Park in Lewisville on Monday, October 5, 2026. Parts of the park are closed while the old structures come out. The city figures the job runs about 120 calendar days, weather permitting.
The new boardwalk and bridge are precast concrete, built to outlast what's there now. The island also gets a concrete patio, benches and a guardrail. All of it brings the total cost of the Lake Avalon boardwalk and bridge replacement to $905,091, paid through the city's parks capital program.
If you walk out there, mind the posted fencing and closure signs until the work wraps.

🏫 Denton ISD lands a school site in the Landmark development
Denton ISD has locked up a 12-acre site for its first elementary school inside Landmark, the 3,200-acre development in southwest Denton. The plans there call for roughly 6,000 single-family homes and 3,000 apartments or townhomes.
Developer Hillwood says this is the first of three Denton ISD campuses planned inside Landmark. The land was bought with money from the district's voter-approved 2023 bond. No construction date yet.
For now, kids in Landmark are zoned to E.P. Rayzor Elementary, Harpool Middle and Guyer High School. The district says it'll watch enrollment before it decides when to build.

🐾 Meet Gizmo!
Six point eight pounds. That's the whole dog. Gizmo is a 12-year-old black and tan Chihuahua mix who landed at the Lewisville shelter on September 22, and he's been waiting on a lap ever since.
Staff peg his energy as moderate, which tracks for a dog his age. He's been housed with other small dogs, so a home that already has a little one could suit him fine. The shelter says he does best with older kids, not the little bitty ones.
His listing doesn't say yet whether he's housetrained, so plan on a routine those first few weeks. Want a small, older dog who won't drag you on long runs? He's worth the trip. While you're there, ask about Jeremiah too, an 11-year-old Chihuahua mix who came in the same day.
Gizmo is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, flea treated and heartworm negative. His adoption fee is $100, and that covers all of it, plus a year of city registration if you live in Lewisville. You'll need to be 18 or older with a government ID, and adoptions are first come, first served.
The shelter's open noon to 5 Tuesday through Saturday. Monday is by appointment, Sunday it's closed. Find him at the Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, 995 E Valley Ridge Blvd, Lewisville, TX 75057. 972-219-3478. Ask for Animal ID 61733995.
