What's up, neighbors!

Aside from a little rain lately, lake season sure seems to be on. The boats are back out, Old Town Lewisville is hopping, and there's enough going on this weekend to make it hard to pick a plan.

Friday night we're heading to LLELA for the Flower Moon Night Hike. Two hours on the trails after dark, $15 a head, ages 5 and up. We've never done one of these and my girlfriend is weirdly excited about the armadillo possibility. If you want in, gates lock at 7:30 sharp.

Saturday, we plan to hit up the Highland Village Art Festival. The Shops at Highland Village turn into a small art fair from 10 to 6, free admission and free parking, 30+ juried artists, live music in the south courtyard, and a kids' art zone. We're going to swing through in the morning with coffee, then come back after lunch when the music gets going.

Heads up: Election Day in Denton County is also Saturday, May 2, for Lewisville City Council, two LISD trustee seats, and Flower Mound Town Council Place 5. Polls run 7 to 7. Bring a photo ID. Full ballot rundown is in the news section below.

Sunday is wide open for my crew. We may call it a rest day or go to the farmers market in Flower Mound for some local honey, but there’s plenty else to do for those who want to get out.

Scroll down for the full weekend planner, a Highland Village trophy listing, our pick for breakfast in Old Town, and a German Shepherd named Chico.

In Today’s Lookout:

  • 🌙 A LLELA night hike Friday with armadillos and owls

  • 🥞 The Old Town breakfast spot with a Bonnie and Clyde legend

  • 🗣️ Election Day Saturday and your full Denton County ballot

  • 🤖 Flower Mound HS robotics is at Worlds in Houston this weekend

  • 🎨 The Highland Village Art Festival Saturday, free, 30+ artists

  • 🏡 Three homes from $360K to… ??? (take a guess!)

  • 🐕 Meet Chico, an 87-pound gentle giant who just wants a couch

If a new business opened walking distance from your house, what would you want it to be?

🌕 Flower Moon Night Hike at LLELA

Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area
201 E Jones St, Lewisville, TX 75057
7:30-9:30 PM
Friday, May 1
$15 per person, ages 5+

The Flower Moon is May's full moon, named by the Farmers' Almanac for the wave of spring blooms that happen right after it.

What you get is two hours of guided trail walking after dark across LLELA's woods and prairie, with the guides calling out howling coyotes, hooting owls, and the occasional armadillo bump in the brush.

It's the closest thing to off-grid you'll get fifteen minutes from your kitchen, and the kids will lose their minds in the good way.

Ages 5 and up, $15 a head, and flashlights are explicitly NOT required aka they want your eyes adjusted to the dark.

Two heads-ups before you book. Gates lock at 7:30 so if you're not in by start time you're not getting in, and LLELA wants you in long pants and closed-toe shoes since it's prairie at night in May.

Register online before the list closes, because these fill up.

🍖 Main Street Cafe

208 E Main St, Old Town Lewisville

If you've been driving past the old Victorian on Main and wondered what it is, that's Main Street Cafe. The house was built in 1885, and local legend says the original owner, Dr. Kennedy, used to get blindfolded and dragged off to patch up Bonnie and Clyde (let’s just say this place has stories). We go for breakfast on slow weekday mornings, but it’s worth the weekend rush.

The smiley face pancakes are great if you're bringing kids. Mike's Special is what the regulars order, and the homemade salsa on top is the reason. They’ve got big veggie omelettes, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, the whole deal. Stay through lunch and you can get into chicken fried steak or the "potato chip" chicken, which is exactly what it sounds like and weirdly excellent.

Just know they close at 3pm Sunday through Wednesday. Thursday through Saturday they stay open until 9pm if you want to come back for dinner.

Bring an appetite, the portions are big.

💍 Beasley's Fine Jewelry

177 W Main St, Old Town Lewisville

With Mother's Day on May 10, this is a useful one to know. Beasley's has been on W Main since 1948, founded by Mr. and Mrs. Beasley and now run by Lisa Dubberley, the third-generation owner with 35+ years in the jewelry business herself. Same building, same family, three generations in.

It's a working jewelry store and boutique. They carry designer lines like Gabriel, Mark Schneider, and Benchmark, and their in-house master jeweler handles repairs, resizing, custom design, and heirloom rework where you bring in your grandmother's stones and walk out with something you'll actually wear. The boutique side stocks clothing too, and the staff doubles as personal shoppers if you want help putting an outfit together.

What customers keep coming back for is Lisa. Reviews say the same thing: she greets you by name, never pushes a sale, and works through your options honestly. If you've ever felt rushed at a chain jeweler, this is the cure.

Heads up: closed Sundays, so for Mother's Day, plan a stop by Saturday May 9 at 3 PM.

🗳️ Election Day is Saturday, May 2

Polls are open across Denton County this Saturday, May 2 for the spring municipal elections.

On the Lewisville ballot: City Council Place 1 (Erum Ali, Brent Kuykendall, Zammang Mualcin) and Place 3 (Adrian Doko, Ronni Cade, Tiffany Karim), plus two Lewisville ISD trustee seats including a Place 5 race between Staci Barker and Brian Pollard. In Flower Mound, Town Council Place 5 is a three-way contest between Clare Harris, Ethan Mitchell, and Susan Cox to replace the termed-out Ann Martin. Place 2 incumbent Chris Drew is unopposed.

Polls run 7 AM to 7 PM. Bring a photo ID. Any registered Denton County voter can cast a ballot at any open polling location.

🏗️ Boys & Girls Club breaks ground on first Denton County clubhouse

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County held a groundbreaking last Friday at 195 W. Corporate Drive in Lewisville for what will be the organization's first permanent location in Denton County. The site is the old Lewisville fire station, which the Club purchased on April 9.

The spot was picked for proximity: Lewisville High School, three elementary schools, a middle school, and several neighborhoods are all within walking range. When it opens this fall, the club will offer academic support, daily meals, mentorship, and enrichment in arts, sports, technology, and workforce prep.

🤖 Flower Mound HS robotics team is at Worlds this weekend

The Mechanical Advantage team from Flower Mound High is in Houston this week competing at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship, running April 29 through May 2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Roughly 800 teams from more than 60 countries qualified.

The team punched its ticket after winning first place at the Texas UIL State Robotics Championship and earning the Inspire Award, which honors engineering, outreach, and overall team performance. Seven students are on the squad. Worth keeping an eye on the school's social channels this weekend if you want to track how they finish.

🎨 Three local students sweep the Congressional Art Competition

Congressman Brandon Gill announced last week that all three winners of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for District 26 are from the area.

First place: Annika Niu of the Academy of Ivy Art in Lewisville for "Echoes of Revolution."

Second: Flower Mound High senior Emily Zhang for "Weaving Together America."

Third: FMHS sophomore Maanya Varma for her oil painting "Riding Free."

Niu's piece will hang in the U.S. Capitol for a year as part of the national exhibit. Varma's "Riding Free" will be on display in the Congressman's Flower Mound district office.

🐾 Meet Chico

Adult (3-8 years) German Shepherd mix, male, 87lbs, neutered

Eighty-seven pounds of dog stops being intimidating once Chico actually says hi. He's a German Shepherd mix at the Lewisville shelter, somewhere between three and eight years old, and the volunteers describe him in three words: gentle giant. He is already neutered, vaccinated, and heartworm negative, so the medical work is behind him.

What he wants is a couch, a person, and a regular cuddle session. His activity level is moderate, which for a Shepherd mix his size means real walks and a yard for sniffing, not a marathon partner.

Heads up: Chico isn't interested in other dogs. That sounds like a flag, but for a lot of people it's a feature. If you're looking for a one-and-only who's going to be 100% your dog, he's exactly that. The shelter doesn't have notes on how he is with kids since they don't know his history, so bring the family in to meet him before committing.

Chico is at the City of Lewisville Animal Shelter at 995 E Valley Ridge Blvd. Adoption is $90 and covers sterilization, vaccines, microchip, and heartworm testing. Walk in during open hours or call to start the conversation.

🎨 Highland Village Art Festival

The Shops at Highland Village
1701 Shoal Creek, Highland Village, TX 75077
10:00 AM-6:00 PM
Saturday, May 2
Free

This is one of those Saturdays that feels distinctly Highland Village. The 11th annual Art Festival takes over the courtyards at The Shops with 30+ juried gallery-quality artists, live music in the south courtyard, demonstrations throughout the day, and a kids' art zone you can park the kids at for an hour without guilt. Free, no tickets, no parking fees, and it benefits Kids Kastle.

What it is: The Shops at Highland Village is the open-air shopping village at FM 2499 and Justin Road, walking distance from the lake. Wide brick sidewalks, big shade trees, fountains, and a south courtyard next to Chico's that turns into a small concert venue for the day. The festival uses the whole property, so you stroll the artist booths, drift through the storefronts, eat at the restaurants on site, and circle back to the music. It's a pick-your-pace kind of day.

Morning plan (10:00 AM-12:00 PM): Get there early when the artists are fresh and the kids' art area isn't a line. The first round of music kicks off mid-morning, demonstrations are scheduled throughout the day, and parking is easiest before noon. Coffee at one of the cafes on site is the move while you do a first lap of the booths.

Mid-day (12:00-3:00 PM): Lunch at any of the restaurants right at The Shops without leaving the festival. Walk the booths a second time. The artists you weren't sure about in the morning will make more sense after a sandwich. Kids can rotate between the art zone and the open courtyards while the adults browse.

Afternoon (3:00-6:00 PM): Music gets bigger and the crowd thicker as the day winds down. If you're thinking about buying a piece, this is when artists become a little more flexible since nobody wants to pack everything back into a van. Late-afternoon light on the courtyard is genuinely beautiful by 5:30.

Logistics: Free admission, free parking on site, bathrooms in the shopping center. Strollers roll easily on the brick sidewalks. Dogs welcome in the open courtyards but check individual stores before going in. No registration needed, just show up.

Heads up: Outdoor festival means weather matters. The Shops have plenty of covered overhangs if a quick shower hits, but a hard rainstorm would push some of the experience inside the stores. Check the City of Highland Village's social channels Friday night if the forecast looks dicey.

This week: Jobs hiring now in Lewisville, Flower Mound, The Colony, Highland Village, Little Elm, and the rest of the lake area.
