Hey, y'all!
Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and our corner of Texas is not playing it cool. Grandscape’s got the easiest candy run of the weekend, and it’s free. Trick or Treat Extravaganza goes 6 to 9 p.m., and the parking garage is free like always. Our plan is simple: take the kids early, hit the stops before the candy runs low, and grab dinner at Grandscape on the way out.
Sunday we all get an extra hour of sleep, and Grandscape closes the weekend out with a free Día de los Muertos Celebration on the lawn, UNT mariachi band and a Tejano headliner and all.
In the news: Denton just made it a whole lot harder to build a data center, and Flower Mound voters decide on a street-repair sales tax November 3. Early voting wraps Friday, October 30, so don’t sit on it.
Also inside: tacos from a family-run Tex-Mex spot in The Colony, a comic shop in Lewisville that throws game and book nights, a showcase home in Flower Mound, and Freddy, a 3-year-old tabby still waiting at the shelter.
See you on Main Street,

Most of us set up home and auto insurance once and never look at it again. Bramble Insurance is an independent agency, so a licensed agent can compare options across more than one company before winter weather shows up. Fill out their online form and finish a quote with a licensed agent, and they’ll send you a $5 Chick-fil-A gift card.

🍬 Trick or Treat Extravaganza
Grandscape
5752 Grandscape Blvd, The Colony, TX
Saturday, October 31, 2026
6 to 9 p.m.
Free
This is the easiest candy run in the whole area. The whole shopping district turns into one long trick-or-treat route, and the kids just work it stop to stop while the candy lasts.
There's more than candy going on too. Character meet-and-greets, a live DJ, and stage shows at 7 and 8:30 p.m. The whole thing's presented by Baylor Scott & White Health.
Here's what seals it. The event is free, and so is the Crest Auto parking garage off Destination Drive. So wear the costume, bring the biggest bag you've got, and get there early before the good stuff's gone.

🌮 Emelia's Tex Mex & Taqueria
Emelia's is a little family spot in The Colony, and they've been at it since 2009. Breakfast is homemade and they'll serve it to you all day. Bar's got agave margaritas and craft beer when you want them.
The taqueria side is where your money goes far. Street tacos run $2.59 a piece, your pick of asada, chicken, brisket, carnitas or al pastor. Three of them with rice and beans is $10.99. The One Pound Burrito is $9.99, and yeah, it's a pound.
Want breakfast? The full menu covers breakfast tacos for $2.99, migas for $9.99 and Texas-style Tex-Mex plates like enchiladas for $10.99. The Daily Special, two tacos with rice and beans, is $6.99.
One reviewer summed it up: "excellent food, fantastic service, great value!" That's the whole deal. Cheap, quick, friendly.

Sat 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

🎮 Boomerang Comics and Games
Boomerang is Lewisville's own shop for comics, trading cards, collectibles and tabletop games. It's the kind of place where somebody behind the counter will walk you through a deck or hand you a good first issue without making you feel dumb about it.
The calendar's the reason to swing by this weekend. Magic: The Gathering Commander Night runs every Friday, 7 to 10 p.m. Bring your own deck.
Halloween Saturday gives you two picks. TCG Trade Night runs 2 to 5 p.m., so bring your binder (they bring the snacks and giveaways). Book Night, their monthly comic book club, runs 7 to 9. One reviewer put it plainly: the "staff here are approachable and knowledgeable."
Price: $ to $$
Hours:
Mon, Tue, Thu 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Wed 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Fri 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

🏛️ Denton tightens its data center rules
Denton City Council voted 4-0 this month to make data centers a lot harder to build. From here on they're boxed into light industrial, heavy industrial and public facilities zoning, and every single one needs its own specific-use permit and a council vote to go with it.
That's not all. Projects now need a 300-foot setback, limits on light bleeding into nearby homes, state PUC and ERCOT sign-offs, water and wastewater studies, and closed-loop or free-air cooling.
A separate 90-day moratorium had its final public hearing Tuesday, and no vote was taken. Council could vote as soon as December 1, and it needs a 75% supermajority to pass. Two council members floated stretching it to 180 days. The two projects already approved, Qumulus AI and Core Scientific, wouldn't be affected.

🗳️ Flower Mound's street-repair sales tax is on the November 3 ballot
Flower Mound voters decide on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 whether to keep the quarter-cent sales tax that's set aside for street maintenance. Read that again: it's a renewal of a tax already on the books, not a new one.
Early voting runs through Friday, October 30, 2026. Denton County voters can use any Denton County early voting site, and the slice of town in Tarrant County votes at Tarrant County sites.
Headed to the polls? Bring one of the seven approved photo IDs. And remember, no electioneering within 100 feet of a polling place.

🚑 Flower Mound adopts its largest-ever fee update
Flower Mound's Town Council signed off on the new fee schedule September 21, and it kicked in October 1. The Gazette calls it the largest fee adjustment in town history.
The headline change hits medical facilities, which can now be billed up to $1,500 for certain nonemergency calls. That's $500 for a lift assist when somebody's fallen with no sign of injury, and $1,500 for nonemergency medical transport. A third-party contractor is the one who decides whether a call was medically necessary.
Now, if you fall at home, you can still call the Fire Department for free, and you're not billed for an ambulance. Fire officials say the fees aren't about revenue. The goal is keeping crews free for urgent calls.

💵 Highland Village's tax rate rises as the city trims events
Highland Village's new budget started this month with a property tax rate of $0.528541 per $100, up from $0.500984. Mayor Charlotte Wilcox says that's about $105.74 a year added to the average taxpayer's city bill.
Here's the squeeze. Certified property values fell 2.8% and sales tax is projected 2.0% lower, so General Fund spending drops 1.9% to $25.7 million. The city froze three vacant non-public-safety jobs and cut The Amazing Race, Wine Down with the Grinch, Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park.
Road work's coming too. An overlay on Sellmeyer Lane starts this month, and a Highland Shores Boulevard reconstruction is on the books for 2026.

🐾 Meet Freddy

3 years, Domestic Shorthair/Mix
Freddy's a brown tabby who's been waiting at the Lewisville shelter since October 3. He's a 3-year-old domestic shorthair mix, already neutered, and ready for a home of his own.
His profile doesn't say yet how he does with a litterbox, kids, dogs or other cats, so a meet-and-greet is how you find out. The staff can fill you in on the rest when you stop by.
His adoption fee is $80, and that covers his neuter, microchip, vaccines including rabies, and a gift bag, plus a year of city registration if you live in Lewisville. You'll need to be 18 or older with a government ID, and it's first come, first served.
Shelter's open noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Monday is by appointment, Sunday they're closed. Find him at the Gene Carey Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, 995 E Valley Ridge Blvd, Lewisville, TX 75057. 972-219-3478. Ask for Animal ID 61842298.

A UNT mariachi band kicks things off at 6:30, and Tejano Queen Forever takes the stage at 7:30. All ages, so bring everybody.
You already pocketed an extra hour when the clocks fell back this same weekend, so there's no reason to rush home. Grab a spot on the lawn, let the kids run, and let the music carry the night.
