Second week of school's in the books, and we finally caught enough breath to look at the weekend.

Saturday afternoon we're headed to the Grand in Old Town for the Ukrainian Independence Day celebration. Folk dancers in full costume, a live band, and it's free. A show like that rolls through once a year, and this one lands three blocks from the coffee shop.

Friday night's even easier. Grandscape's lawn has a Pitbull tribute act from 8 to 10, also free, and the kids can burn off whatever the school week left in them while somebody else sings Fireball.

Also inside: a Flower Mound dumpling house the Dallas food press found before we did, paddleboards on Little Elm Beach where dogs ride free, and Kevin, an 11-month-old Lab mix who’s a total goofball.

Once a year. That's it. And this year the Ukrainian Cultural Club of Dallas is marking 35 years of Ukraine's renewed independence right here in Old Town.

The Zorya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and the Veselka Ukrainian Band take the Grand's stage, which means real folk dance in full costume, a live band, and a theater packed with neighbors.

It's free. It's open to everybody. And parking along Main and Church won't cost you a dime either.

Come for the dancing, stick around for dinner in Old Town after. This one doesn't roll back through till next August, so get it on the calendar now.

Flower Mound finally has a real dumpling house. And the food press beat us to it. Dumpling Queen opened in late May in the old HERE Asian Cuisine spot on Flower Mound Road, and within a few weeks both D Magazine and CultureMap had written it up. It's casual, it's family-friendly, and it's built for passing plates around the table.

The soup dumplings and hand pulled noodles are what the early reviewers keep going on about. The Four-Color Rainbow Dumplings are the order to get if you want something you can't find anywhere else close by. Not in a dumpling mood? There's pan-fried thumb buns with pork and scallion, scallion pancakes, and the usual comforts like honey walnut shrimp and orange chicken.

One heads up. Weekdays they shut down midday, 3 to 4:30 Monday through Thursday. Friday through Sunday they run straight through, so a late-afternoon dumpling craving is safe on the weekend.

August on Lewisville Lake is either miserable or wonderful. Depends entirely on whether you're in the water. DFW Surf at Little Elm Beach is our vote for getting in it.

They've been putting North Texans on paddleboards since 2007, and the Little Elm Beach outpost rents single and tandem kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boards, and even cruiser bikes right there on the sand. A basic paddleboard or single kayak is $25 for an hour, $40 for two, and every rental comes with life jackets, paddles, and whistles. New this summer: Sunset Paddle Experiences at 7:15 p.m. with a 360 light included for $35, plus Saturday night glow paddle tours, SUP yoga, and a 90-minute beginner class run by certified coaches.

Two things make them worth it. One, dogs paddle free, any day. Two, the staff actually teach. Reviewers keep calling out patient, friendly instructors who put first-timers at ease.

Fine print: you need basic swimming skills, everybody signs a waiver, and Little Elm Beach Park runs $10 a vehicle to get in. Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, closed Tuesday.

Lewisville ISD opened applications for its free and reduced-price meal program back in late July, and families can still sign up now that school's rolling. An adult in the house fills out the form: everyone's names, each person's income amount and source, the last four of the signing adult's Social Security number (or a box to check if they don't have one), and a signature. That's it.

You can file online or in person at the Child Nutrition Department, 1565 W Main St, Building B, Lewisville, TX. The district is also working with local agencies to flag households that qualify automatically, and those families get a heads up that they don't need to apply.

Here's the part folks miss: you can apply at any point during the school year. Somebody loses a job, the household grows, LISD says send in a fresh application, because that change on its own can make the kids eligible. Questions go to Child Nutrition at 469-713-5207.

The burger chain opened its Highland Village spot at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, dropping into the former Capital One branch on Waller Creek at The Shops at Highland Village, Highland Village, TX. Opening day had live music and Texas-themed tumblers for the first 100 folks through the door, and The Shops said $1 from every burger sold that day went to the Lewisville Education Foundation.

Regular hours run 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with Friday and Saturday going till midnight. Menu's the usual: ShackBurger, SmokeShack, crinkle-cut fries, frozen custard and hand-spun shakes.

Up to now the closest Shake Shacks were Southlake, DFW Airport and the Fort Worth Stockyards. So this one saves a bunch of us a drive.

The city has locked in its lineup for Western Days, Sept. 25-26 in Old Town Lewisville. Eli Young Band takes the Republic Services Main Stage at 10 p.m. Friday, a bit of a homecoming for the band that formed at UNT. Randy Rogers Band closes it out at 10 p.m. Saturday, its fourth time playing at the festival.

The music's just the start. Six stages, an expanded Western Village, the Indigenous ACE Dance Troupe, Kid Kountry Playground, Lucha Libre wrestlers, and the sanctioned World Tamale Eating Championship. Gates open 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday. Admission is free before 6 p.m. both days and $15 after 6 p.m. for everyone except children 12 and younger.

That's five weeks out. About the right runway to talk your out-of-town family into making the trip.

A sixty-three-pound Lab mix named Kevin is already a little funny before you meet him. Then you meet him and he starts talking. The shelter's note calls him a talkative goofball, an outgoing boy who loves people and will absolutely let you know about it.

He's eleven months old, which is the age where a dog is mostly legs and enthusiasm. High energy, no brakes yet, extremely interested in whatever you happen to be doing. If you've been thinking about a dog to take out on the LLELA trails or down to the water on a Saturday morning, he's built for exactly that.

A fair amount of his file is still blank. Nobody has seen him around kids or other dogs, and they don't know yet whether he's housetrained. That isn't a warning sign, it just means he arrived without a history. Bring the kids and your own dog for a meet and greet first, which the shelter encourages anyway, and plan on a few weeks of routine to get the house rules settled.

Kevin's at the Gene Carey Animal Shelter on East Valley Ridge. Adoptions there are first come, first served during visiting hours, and staff can tell you his status if you call before you drive over. He's neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative, and the $90 fee covers all of it.
