Howdy, neighbors!

It's Mother's Day weekend, so a lot of you already have plans locked down. Still scrambling? This issue should help.

We're planning to head to the Flower Mound Arts Festival on Saturday morning. It's at Heritage Park, free, with Brave Combo and The Western Flyers (Spotify links down below) on the Pavilion Stage and food trucks lined up. Six years in. Bring grandma if she's around, the kids will burn an hour at the art tables, and you'll knock out a couple of Mother's Day gifts at the local vendor booths without setting foot in a mall.

Friday night a lot of people we know are taking their kids to Doubletree Ranch Park for the free Movie in the Park. They're showing the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Splash pad is open, food trucks set up around 6:30, movie starts at 8:44.

And if you've still got Mother's Day shopping to do, Tullia Sage in Old Town will save you.

Scroll down for the full weekend planner, some local news, brunch picks for Sunday, and a listing you should try to guess the price of.

🎨 Flower Mound Arts Festival

Heritage Park
600 Spinks Rd, Flower Mound, TX 75028
Saturday, May 9
10:00 AM–4:00 PM
FREE

Six years in and the Arts Festival has officially become the spring tradition that just feels like Flower Mound.

This year's theme is Shapes, with Heritage Park filling up with local art vendors, food trucks, two stages of live music, and hands-on art tables for the kids.

The Pavilion Stage headliners are Brave Combo (Spotify) and The Western Flyers (Spotify) aka the kind of bands that turn a Saturday afternoon into a memory you actually keep.

It's the rare event that works for grandparents, kids, and a date-day couple all at once, so bring whoever you've got.

FREE, walkable from half the neighborhood, and easily the best Mother's Day weekend warm-up on the calendar.

Show up early and stay for the music.

🍝D'Nonna

233 W Church St, Lewisville (Old Town)

This is the spot in Old Town we end up at when we want real Italian and don't feel like making the drive into Dallas. D'Nonna sits on Church Street near Wayne Ferguson Plaza, with a wood-fire oven going, a piano in the corner, and the kind of room that fills up by 7 on a Friday. Good for date night, a family dinner, or that Mother's Day reservation you still haven't made.

The calamari with artichokes and peppers is what most people start with, and it's worth the order. The Nonno pizza out of the wood oven and the chicken Alfredo come up in nearly every review, and the Seafood D'Nonna is the one to get if mom wants something a little more special. Half-priced wine on Wednesday and Thursday, open piano night Wednesdays, and live music Friday and Saturday, so it's never just dinner.

Walk over from the Farmers Market on Saturday morning, or pair it with a tasting at Larue Winery a block away. Easy way to make a whole afternoon of it.

🛍️ Tullia Sage

162 W Main St, Lewisville (Old Town)

If you're still hunting for the Mother's Day gift, walk over to Tullia Sage on Main Street in Old Town.

It's a women-owned boutique run by Julie and Kristen Sheeley, a mother-daughter team who curate the whole shop from other women-owned brands.

The mix is mom, baby, and toddler.

Modern minimalist baby and kids clothes (Rylee + Cru, Quincy Mae, Noralee, Mebie Baby), easy-wear pieces for mom, plus accessories, home goods, baby-shower-ready gifts, and a small greeting card section so you can wrap the whole thing up in one stop.

Reviewers consistently mention two things: how personal the owners and staff are, and the small play space tucked inside the store that makes shopping with little kids actually doable.

What's there is carefully curated, not jammed onto shelves, and the people running the store are the people checking you out.

Part of why Tullia Sage keeps showing up in Best of Denton County nominations.

Easy walk from D'Nonna and the Farmers Market.

🍔 Whataburger Flower Mound finally opened Tuesday, May 5

Flower Mound's first-ever Whataburger opened at 11 AM Tuesday, May 5 at 3201 Long Prairie Road, ending the long stretch as the largest North Texas municipality without one. The $2.5 million, 3,355-square-foot location has two drive-thru lanes and runs 24 hours a day.

The first customers in line at the counter and drive-thru get gift baskets that include Whataburger for a year. Town Council originally approved the project in April 2023, and it's hit delays at nearly every step since, so consider this one earned. Note: Slim Chickens, the other planned chain at the same intersection, has officially backed out, with no replacement named yet.

🏗️ $77.8M apartment community breaks ground at Grandscape

JPI recently broke ground on Jefferson Grandscape II, a 5-story, 277-unit apartment community at 5500 Nebraska Furniture Mart Drive in The Colony. The $77.8 million project is financed in partnership with Nebraska Furniture Mart and is JPI's 124th DFW development, with completion targeted for January 2028.

The mix runs studios through three-bedrooms, plus a sky-lounge, courtyards with fire pits, and a resort-style pool. If you live in The Colony or shop the Grandscape entertainment corridor, this changes the daily traffic and density picture out there over the next 18 months.

🌳 Highland Village wants your vote on Lower Sellmeyer Park's new playground

Highland Village is taking community input on the new playground design at Lower Sellmeyer Park along Sellmeyer Lane. Multiple design options are on the survey, all multi-generational and built for kids ages 2 to 12, with installation costs included so residents can see the trade-offs. Current project budget is $140,000.

A November public input meeting flagged the playground as a high priority. Survey results will be presented to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board this month. If you've got kids or grandkids who use the park, this is the easy one to weigh in on.

🎖️ FMPD's Officer Mike Anderson named LISD School Resource Officer of the Year

Lewisville ISD named Flower Mound Police Officer Mike Anderson the 2026 School Resource Officer of the Year. Anderson has served at Forestwood Middle School for the past two years and has been an SRO for 17 years total. He grew up in LISD schools and sent his three kids through the district as well.

Anderson hits 25 years with FMPD this June and has racked up multiple commendations along the way, including the Cross Timbers Rotary Club Vocational Service Excellence Award. This is the third year in a row a Flower Mound officer has earned the LISD honor.

🐾 Meet Amora

Young 1-3 years, American Domestic Short Hair

She's a black cat about a year old, small enough to disappear into a single armchair, and the kind of cat who treats following you to the bathroom as her full-time job. Her name is Amora. She's a young mama who's already raised her kittens and now finally gets to relax and just be a cat herself.

The volunteers say she melts for belly rubs and turns into a complete lovebug the second she trusts you. She'll be your shadow from one room to the next, not because she's anxious, just because she'd rather be near you. If you've ever wanted a cat who actually likes being around people instead of pretending she doesn't, this is the one.

She's good with dogs, good with other cats, and house-trained. Compatibility with kids is unknown, so if that matters for your home, ask the rescue about a meet-and-greet first. Adoption fee is $100 and she's already spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and FeLV/FIV tested.

Amora is fostered through Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue (yes, the guinea pig people occasionally take in cats too). They run on appointments only, so the move is to fill out their online application and they'll reach out to set up a meet. The rescue is in Lewisville right off Metro Park Circle.

🐉 Movie in the Park: How to Train Your Dragon (Live Action)

Doubletree Ranch Park
310 Highland Village Rd, Highland Village
Movie starts at civil twilight end (8:44 PM)
Friday, May 8
Free
More info

This is one of those Friday nights that feels distinctly Highland Village. The city's Movie in the Park series rolls into its second Friday with the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon, projected on a giant screen on the south shore of Lewisville Lake. Kids who grew up on the animated version will lose it. Adults will probably tear up at "Test Drive."

What it is: Doubletree Ranch Park is on the lake's south shore, with about a mile of paved trail under big pecans and live oaks, a stocked fishing pond, soccer fields, a zero-depth splash pad, and a wide grass lawn that turns into a sea of camping chairs and picnic blankets on movie nights. The park is a year-round neighborhood favorite, but movie nights are when it really shows off.

Pre-show plan (6:30-8:30 PM): Get there early. Spread your blanket on the lawn before the good spots fill up. Food trucks set up before the show, so plan dinner there or bring your own cooler. The splash pad is open, so pack towels if the kids are going to want a turn. There's a shield-decorating craft, mini dragon-glider builds, free "dragon eggs," and HTTYD temporary tattoos to keep the kids busy until civil twilight ends.

During the show (8:44 PM-end): The movie projects onto the lawn. Sight lines work from just about anywhere if you pick a spot facing the screen. Bring jackets, May nights still cool off after sundown, especially that close to the water.

Logistics: Free parking on site, but it fills early on movie nights so plan to arrive by 7. Bathrooms in the park. Dogs welcome on leash. No registration needed, just show up. Sponsored by Kuzmich Law Firm.

Heads up: If weather forces a postponement, the rain date is Friday, May 15 (civil twilight ends 8:49 PM). Check the city's Facebook page that afternoon if it's looking iffy.

This week: Jobs hiring in Lewisville, Flower Mound, Highland Village, and The Colony

The Shops at Highland Village is staffing up across the lifestyle center for spring. Stores currently posting include See's Candies, Chico's, YETI, Vineyard Vines, Bluemercury, Lush, and Paper Source, with restaurant servers and hosts wanted at the in-center spots. Good fit for a part-time gig in walking distance of half the neighborhood.

Grandscape in The Colony is hiring across more than 30 active openings as the entertainment corridor heads into peak season. PF Chang's needs servers, Kilwins is looking for shift leads, and The Escape Game is hiring Guest Experience Specialists starting at $13/hour. Plenty of nights, weekends, and summer help wanted.

Lewisville ISD is running its summer hiring push for the 2026-27 school year. Positions are open for teachers, paraprofessionals, ESD after-school aides starting at $12.36/hour, food service, and bus drivers. The district uses one online application portal that stays active for a year, so it's worth filling out even if you're only sort of looking.

Lewisville Public Library hires across professional librarian roles and part-time support staff, with current part-time openings around $20.36/hour. Summer reading is about to ramp up at every branch, which is when the library leans hardest on staff.

Denton County Sheriff's Office is hiring deputies plus civilian roles in detention support, communications, and admin. All county openings post through GovernmentJobs.com. The City of Lewisville Police Department is also actively hiring officers, with postings on the city career page.

Bonus help (free): Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas runs a Denton-area workforce center offering free job matching, resume help, career coaching, and skills training for residents. Walk-ins welcome, all services no cost.
